Find The Right Outfitter
1/4/2007

Trying to find a place to hunt can be all but impossible in many areas these days. What can the average hunter do who likes the great outdoors and wants to continue the tradition of hunting?

An outfitter may be your answer but where does one go to find an outfitter that can fill the particular needs that you may wish for your ultimate hunting experience?

The Internet can prove to be a great place to find an outfitter. You can actually find the exact outfitters that specialize in the game you wish to pursue from African game safaris to whitetail deer hunting in the Midwest, they’re all here on the internet at a finger’s reach on the keyboard.

One very good site is a site called huntingoutfitters.com. This site gives you a list of outfitters and what they specialize in.

A useful tool in searching for an outfitter on the Internet is that you can take all the time you want to look over his operation. You can usually find photos, and a good description and a contact to get you in touch with an outfitter. Many outfitters will include testimonials from former clients who have used their services. These things can all be invaluable in finding the right outfitter to fill your hunting needs.

Outdoor shows can be a great place to find outfitters

Outdoor shows can be another great place to find outfitters to fill your needs. I have found some very good outfitters by browsing the aisles of outdoor shows. Some points to remember when talking with outfitters at an outdoor show are:

  • Don’t judge the outfitter by his display of heads. This may or may not be a good representation of what the outfitter has to offer.
  • Try to talk to the outfitter himself if at all possible not someone just filling in for him in the booth.
  • Get a feel for what his views are on a quality hunt. Do they match up to your expectations?
  • Ask questions, ask questions, and ask questions!!!!!
  • Does he furnish you a guide in with the initial cost of the hunt?
  • Does he provide preparation of the game animal once harvested and can he arrange transportation of the meat to the locker?
  • Is your lodging included and if so how about bringing a guest along?
  • What is the success rate on the particular game animal you wish to hunt?
  • Be honest about your limitations and physical capabilities, the last place you want to find out about these is in the field when you may be unable to continue the strenuous hunt.
While attending outdoor shows be sure to talk to as many outfitters as you can. Realize the outfitter has probably been sitting there for quite some time so allow that he may be a little tired looking, but courteous questions and dialogue is the foundation for a great future hunt.

When corresponding on the Internet to an outfitter be sure to do the same, as you would at an outdoors show. Know what you want ahead of time and ask questions. Probably 75% of unenjoyable hunts have been results of miscommunications between what the outfitter has to offer and what the client expects. It costs nothing to ask questions and will gain you everything. Follow up phone calls as you think of other concerns to an outfitter are certainly in order. You should know going into the hunt exactly what you can expect and what is expected of you, this includes tipping of the staff as well. Finding the right outfitter can be an easy task when you tap into the Internet and take the time to attend outdoor shows. The next question is how many trips can you arrange, and that my friend is entirely up to you.
